New addiction for Chiefs
Club rugby

Winning is getting to be a habit for the Chiefs and all evidence points that they are unlikely to shake their addiction in the next couple of weeks. This after Hennie Pieterse’s troops beat Randfontein 24-20 at home on Saturday.

Following their narrow 36-35 loss to Harlequins last weekend, the Chiefs marauded past Randfontein in what Pieterse described as:  “A total team effort.”

It was the Chiefs’ fourth win in five weeks and they all but secured their place in the play-offs.

Flyhalf Grant Kolesky sustained an ankle injury during the match, but saw the encounter through whilst Pieterse had to replace both his centres as the game progressed. Chris Knezovich’s torn knee ligaments kept him out of the match, but the Chiefs proved that it takes more than a few injuries to keep them down.

“I’m very happy with the team’s performance. They guys all played really well,” said Pieterse.

The Chiefs were quick of the mark with a try in the first few minutes and stormed to a 17-3 lead where after Randfontein clawed their way back to even the scores.

With time almost out on the clock, Rob Emery burst through a maul and sent Gary Mahlangu over for the winning try.

According to Pieterse, the win can also be attributed to fullback Carl Goss’ goal kicking. Goss slotted three conversions and a penalty.

The Chiefs’ next two games, against Randburg Diggers and Inquina, are both at home and they have all the momentum to bag another two wins.

Scorers:

Wanderers: Tries: Chris Savage, Peter Flemmer, Gary Mahlangu. Conversions: Carl Goss (3). Penalty: Carl Goss.
